In order to legally trade in liquor in South Africa - whether selling, manufacturing or distributing liquor- it is a legal requirement that one has a valid liquor license which permits you to trade. This applies to many different establishments such as restaurant, bars, hotels, entertainment and conference facilities and a host of other businesses.

Applications need to be made to the Provincial Liquor Board - the legally mandated agency - for the granting of liquor licenses. Licenses must then be renewed annually.

The liquor license application process may vary from province to province and often requires the submission of a large amount of supporting documentation. The Provincial Liquor Board thoroughly considers every application, taking into account a number of factors, including the municipal and zoning regulations, the intended use of the premises and the particularities of the applicants surrounds, as well as any objections lodged against the granting of a liquor license.
